Nestle recalls drumstick cones listeria concerns

Nestle USA recalls its drumstick ice cream after learning of a possible listeria contamination. In some states like California, the weather is still warm, and ice cream trucks still drive around with their funny jingles. Parents are being warned not to buy Nestlé Drumstick treats for their children.

On Saturday, Nestlé USA issued a press release where they announced that they would take part in a voluntary recall on drumstick cones. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed that Nestlé Drumstick Club 16-count variety pack and the 24-count vanilla pack will be removed from stores nationwide.

The Nestlé Drumstick Club 16-count packages have the following best before date between June 2, 2016 and June 15, 2017. Nestlé Drumstick Club Vanilla 24 have the best before date between June 16, 2016 and June 19, 2017.

The recall is taking place because the company learned that equipment in a facility tested positive for listeria. It appears that the cones were not contaminated. Thus far no one has fallen sick because of the cones. Pregnant women, children, and senior citizens are more prone to contract the illness. The symptoms of listeriosis include:

“Fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur. However, infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness.”

Nestlé shared in a statement:

“The company received positive test results for Listeria monocytogenes (LM) from equipment contact surfaces from a location on the production line where these products are made. There have been no positive test results for LM present in the Drumstick cones themselves. The products impacted by the voluntary recall were put into distribution inadvertently.”

The statement went on to say:

“Consumers who may have purchased the product listed above should not consume it, but instead should return it to the place of purchase or contact Nestlé Consumer Services for replacement.”
