Spider-Man star Tobey McGuire didn’t feel his spider-sense tingling when he decided to play those high stakes poker games with a hedge fund manager named Bradley Ruderman.

Ruderman is cooling his heels in prison for running a ponzi scheme that defrauded a group of clients. Seems that Ruderman had been playing with his clients’ money to the losing tune of $5.2 million.

Word is that McGuire and some other high profile Hollywood types love to play these games where big money is on the table. That’s fine but in California it’s against the law. These are unlicensed poker games that were held at big name hotels. Because Ruderman had been using his clients’ money and Toby and his buddies won it from him, the money they won is considered ill-gotten gains and the lawyers and bankruptcy court for Ruderman want to go after his winnings.

This might be a sticky one as if the court agrees it could well mean an assessment of McGuire’s earnings from the games as well as his other players and if any other discrepancies arise it could mean a meeting with the law.
