Olivia Wilde‘s appearance at CinemaCon Tuesday in Las vegas created quite a stir and led to many questions that Internet sleuths attempted to answer.

While the actress was making the presentation for her new film, Don’t Worry Darling, an unknown woman from the front stage handed her a large and mysterious manila envelope.

It was labeled with the words “personal & confidential” on the front.

According to reporter Chris Lee, an attendee of the event, the 38-year-old actress and director believed that the envelope contained an unsolicited script from an audacious filmmaker.

Upon receiving the envelope, Olivia Wilde thanked the woman and said: “This is for me? Is this a script? Ok, got it. Thank you.”

Wilde read the documents inside the envelope, stayed poised, and continued with the presentation about the film.

Olivia Wilde’s CinemaCon envelope mystery solved

Like Wilde, many assumed she had scored a major contract to star in another great movie. However, others believed that it was a prank or it was part of the presentation.

It was eventually revealed that Wilde had to deal with a serious family matter as the audience watched on — she was served with custody papers from her ex-husband’s attorney.

The legal documents related to the custody of her and Jason Sudeikis‘s children. Wilde and Sudeikis share a son, Otis, 8, and a daughter, Daisy, 5.

The former Saturday Night Live star and the Book Smart director, who were engaged for seven years, ended their romance in late 2020.

Wilde has been dating British pop star turned actor Harry Styles, one of the leads of Don’t Worry Darling, alongside Florence Pugh.

Olivia Wilde felt mortified and confused when she was handed the mysterious envelope

Olivia Wilde has not yet spoken about the odd moment, but a source close to her revealed to Page Six that she was confused and mortified to be served with legal papers from former fiancée Jason Sudeikis during her CinemaCon presentation.

The source explained to the publication: “Olivia was confused when she was handed the envelope, and she was even more confused when she opened it. It seemed unthinkable to her, and it took a moment to set in, but as mortifying as it was, she did not want to give a reaction.”

The insider went on to say that Wilde was “determined to power through” but was upset that Sudeikis or the server attempted to take the shine away from such an important moment.

The source revealed to the media outlet: “She was there to introduce a project that is near and dear to her heart, and for someone to try to take that moment from her — whether it be Jason, a process server, or anyone else — was beyond inappropriate.”

Jason Sudeikis slams the inappropriate manner Olivia Wilde was served the legal documents

A representative for Jason Sudeikis has issued a statement revealing that he is not pleased by the manner the situation was dealt with by the law firm handling the custody case.

It has also been revealed that the Ted Lasso star was not aware that his former fiancée and the mother of his children would have to deal with such a private issue while presenting the trailer for her new film.

The spokesperson for the actor said: “Papers were drawn up to establish jurisdiction relating to the children of Ms. Wilde and Mr. Sudeikis. Mr. Sudeikis had no prior knowledge of the time or place that the envelope would have been delivered as this would solely be up to the process service company involved, and he would never condone her being served in such an inappropriate manner.”

The poorly-timed delivery of legal papers has pushed the heads of CinemaCon, to question the security measure (or lack of) that they currently have in place.

CinemaCon head Mitch Neuhauser told Variety: “To protect the integrity of our studio partners and the talent, we will reevaluate our security protocols. We will act accordingly because it’s the right thing to do. We want to do the safe, proper thing.”

Jason Sudeikis’s claim is disputed by a family lawyer

In an interview with PEOPLE Magazine, a family lawyer stated that Jason Sudeikis would have received prior knowledge that Olivia Wilde would be served the documents in a rather unceremonious fashion.

Family law attorney David Glass, (who is not working with either party in this case), weighed in by saying: “I talked to every one of my clients to get the information on where could we serve him or her. We get all that information from them. And if you’re going to go to that sort of extreme length to do it publicly, to do it in an embarrassing way, I can’t see the client not knowing about it. You’re obligated as an attorney to share most things that you’re doing with your client.”

Social media lit up after the story broke.
