In a twist of fate that sounds like it was scripted for a season of Emily in Paris, Lily Collins has announced the miraculous return of her one-of-a-kind engagement ring — nearly three years after it was heartlessly stolen from a luxury hotel spa.
Taking to Instagram this week, Lily shared a beaming photo of the ring back on her left hand, admitting she was “still speechless” over the recovery. “Having this home means SO much to us,” the actress gushed, ending a years-long saga of loss and mystery.
The Bizarre Heist
The nightmare began in May 2023 at the West Hollywood EDITION hotel. Lily had been enjoying a relaxing day at the spa and had placed her most precious belongings — including her bespoke engagement ring and wedding band — into a secure locker. When she returned, the locker was empty.
What made the story truly “bizarre” was the lack of evidence. Authorities noted there were no signs of forced entry, leading investigators to believe a sophisticated thief or someone with insider access had bypassed the security. For years, the trail went cold, despite the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department identifying a person of interest, Andreea Catalina Rosca, in a string of similar hotel burglaries.
The “Stunning” One-Of-A-Kind Design
The ring itself is a masterpiece of jewelry design, valued at an estimated $80,000 to $100,000. Designed by Irene Neuwirth in collaboration with Lily’s husband, Charlie McDowell, it is far from your standard celebrity sparkler.
The Stone: A rare, square-shaped rose-cut diamond. Unlike modern cuts, the rose cut has a flat base and a faceted dome, giving it a soft, romantic, and translucent glow.
The Setting: A “see-through” bezel setting in warm yellow gold. This unique choice allows light to pass through the diamond entirely, creating an ethereal effect that Lily once described as her “favorite accessory.”
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart SO much for the most stunning, perfect ring. It’s breathtaking,” Lily Collins said at the time.
The Miracle Recovery: Who Found It?
While the public assumed the ring had been melted down or the stone sold on the black market, a jeweler in Chicago named Joe the Jeweler (J.O. Jewelers) became the hero of the story.
The recovery has raised dozens of questions: How did it end up in Chicago? While the full police report remains under wraps, it appears the ring surfaced when someone attempted to sell or appraise it. Because the ring is so distinctive — a bespoke rose-cut diamond with a very specific bezel setting — it was immediately recognizable to anyone in the high-end jewelry world.
“So grateful to @joethejewelerchicago for helping me recover my original engagement ring after it was stolen almost three years ago. I’m still speechless, it’s back on my finger,” Lily Collins said on Instagram.
According to PEOPLE Magazine, the jeweler reportedly had the brilliant idea of cross-referencing the diamond’s unique dimensions and “fingerprints” with international databases of stolen high-value jewelry. When the match was confirmed, the authorities were notified, and the “stone wall” between Lily and her treasure finally crumbled.
This “shining return” closes a painful chapter for Lily and Charlie, proving that sometimes, even in the world of high-stakes theft, what is lost can eventually find its way home.
But many fans are confused by the story and are hoping that more details will emerge, especially about the possible criminal.
