Anne Hathaway Takes On White Privilege And Straightness In Speech Supporting LGBT Issues

Anne Hathaway White People Privilege

According to Anne Hathaway, the current situation around the rights of LGBT people is downright frightening, and society as a whole needs to step up and take action.

She was being honored with the National Equality Award at the Human Rights Campaign’s National Dinner.

The actress claimed that she has been frightened by some of the statements that have recently come out from LGBT opponents, although she did regain some of her faith after hearing a speech by former Vice President Joe Biden.

Hathaway then went on to speak against the privilege enjoyed by white, straight and cis-gendered people, claiming that they have a much easier way in society than others outside of those groups, something which she saw as very wrong.

Not only that, but the overall attitude that some people are displaying against the LGBT community right now is apparently something that has managed to push her over the top.

The actress does have a personal stake in this discussion, as her older brother is gay, although it does seem she has been motivated by other factors and not just her own relationship with him.

Some have been paying close attention to Hathaway’s recent relationship with Awkwafina, whom she starred alongside in Ocean’s 8.

The comedian introduced the actress at the event. Awkwafina calls Hathaway a “friend and sister.”

The rapper stated: “But let’s be clear, she’s been telegraphing to the queer community for years. Like when she straddled that motorcycle in that spray-on jumpsuit as Catwoman. I’m shivering right now.”

The two seem to be getting along very well, especially regarding their views on the LGBT community and the issues that surround it, and they seem to be a powerful force in the public space, and two of the people that have been doing the most to help introduce equality and understanding between everyone.

Hopefully, more are going to follow in their footsteps after being inspired.
