Ilhan Omar vs Donald Trump Feud Goes Nuclear After Viral Response

Ilhan Omar fires back after Trump revives explosive allegations and tells the Minnesota congresswoman to leave the United States.

Donald Trump Ilhan Omar Feud

For a president who repeatedly insists that Ilhan Omar should leave the United States, Donald Trump spends a remarkable amount of time talking about her.

The Minnesota congresswoman once again became one of Trump’s primary targets during the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Friday, July 24.

While delivering an hour-long speech filled with attacks on journalists and political opponents, Trump mocked Omar’s intelligence, questioned her honesty and repeated the long-running allegation that she married her brother. He then declared that the congresswoman should “get the hell out of our country.”

Omar did not wait long to respond. “The idiot who runs our country,” she wrote on X, does not have either the evidence or courage to take legal action against her. She then turned Trump’s demand around, arguing that he is the person who should leave because he is damaging the United States and turning it an international embarrassment.

The response quickly spread across social media and progressive political spaces, where supporters praised Omar for answering Trump’s personal attack with an equally direct counterpunch.

Donald Trump Cannot Seem To Stop Talking About Ilhan Omar

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner attack was not an isolated jest or a spontaneous insult.

Trump has made Omar one of his most dependable political villains since she entered Congress in January 2019. She is a naturalized citizen, a Somali refugee, a Muslim woman who wears a hijab, and an outspoken member of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing — all characteristics that render her an especially powerful symbol in Trump’s battles over immigration, religion, and American identity.

Jennifer Mercieca, who has closely examined Trump’s political language, believes there is a clear purpose behind his repeated insults. Instead of challenging an opponent’s ideas, Trump attacks the person, making it easier for his supporters to dismiss everything that individual says. Mercieca says the tactic also draws his followers together and keeps public attention focused on him.

That pattern is clearly visible in Trump’s relationship with Omar.

In July 2019, Trump told Omar and three other Democratic congresswomen of color to “go back” to the countries they supposedly came from. Three of the four lawmakers were born in the United States. Omar, the only immigrant among them, arrived as a refugee and later became an American citizen.

Days later, after Trump attacked Omar during a North Carolina rally, members of the crowd began chanting, “Send her back.” Trump initially claimed he disagreed with the chant before praising the people at the rally as “incredible patriots.”

Trump has repeatedly returned to the same themes since then. He has accused Omar of disloyalty, described her as dishonest, promoted misleading or false material about her, and repeatedly suggested that she does not truly belong in the country she represents in Congress.

The attacks continued in February 2026, when Omar and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib pushed back against Trump during his State of the Union address. The MAGA leader answered with another personal broadside. He said both lawmakers should be institutionalized and removed from the country.

Ilhan Omar’s Viral Response Thrills Progressive Supporters

Omar’s response went viral partly because she refused to treat the president’s words as harmless comedy.

Instead of defending her right to remain in the country yet again, she questioned why Trump continues to make accusations without presenting evidence or initiating a legitimate legal case.

For progressives, that was the attraction of her message. Omar did not apologize, explain her entire immigration history, or ask Trump to moderate his language. She simply called his bluff and returned the insult.

Her combative response also reflects how thoroughly the relationship between the two politicians has deteriorated. Omar has described Trump and members of his administration as racist, bigoted, and corrupt. Trump, in turn, has repeatedly portrayed her as dishonest, unintelligent, and fundamentally un-American.

Omar has also argued that Trump’s attacks have consequences beyond political theater. After she was sprayed with an unknown substance during a Minneapolis town hall in January, Omar said the death threats against her rise whenever Trump targets her publicly.

“Every time” Trump uses hateful rhetoric about her and her community, she said, the number of threats “skyrockets.” The president responded to the incident by baselessly suggesting that Ilhan Omar may have arranged the attack herself.

The man arrested over the incident had published pro-Trump messages online, although authorities did not establish that Trump personally directed or encouraged his actions.

How Republicans Tried To Make Omar The Face Of The Democratic Party

Trump’s fixation on Omar has always served a wider political purpose.

Beginning before the 2020 election, Republican strategists tried to replace former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as the symbol of the Democratic Party with Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the other original members of the “Squad.”

The strategy allowed Republicans to connect moderate Democratic candidates with the progressive lawmakers’ positions on immigration, policing, Israel, climate policy, healthcare and government spending — even when those candidates did not share the same views.

Trump made the strategy explicit when he called Omar “the new face of the Democrat Party” while promoting a misleading video that falsely claimed she had been celebrating on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The video was actually recorded at a Congressional Black Caucus event two days later.

The National Republican Congressional Committee similarly vowed to make every Democratic candidate answer for what it called the Squad’s “socialist agenda.”

Michael Fauntroy, a political scientist at Howard University, said Republican attacks on Ilhan Omar bundled together “religion, race, and policy position” into a single political target. That combination made her particularly useful to candidates seeking to motivate conservative voters through fears about socialism, immigration, and cultural change.

The approach carried risks. While Ilhan Omar can energize Republican voters, personal attacks based on her birthplace and religion can also alienate independents, suburban voters and Americans who see her refugee-to-Congress story as evidence of the country’s democratic promise.

The strategy may also benefit Ilhan Omar. Every presidential attack strengthens her national profile, energizes progressive supporters and pushes her argument that she is being singled out because of her identity and politics.

Is There Any Merit To Donald Trump’s Claims About Ilhan Omar?

Trump’s most serious allegation is that Omar married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, to commit immigration fraud.

That allegation has circulated in conservative media for years. Omar has denied it, describing the claim as a disgusting lie.

Investigations by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, PolitiFact and other fact-checkers uncovered unusual and complicated details surrounding Ilhan Omar’s past marriages and tax filings. However, they did not find conclusive public evidence proving that Elmi was her brother.

The Star Tribune reported that it could “neither conclusively confirm nor rebut” the allegation. PolitiFact similarly concluded that the available evidence was insufficient to determine that the claim was true.

This difference is important. Unanswered questions or gaps in the public record do not equal proof of immigration fraud.

Omar became an American citizen in 2000, years before the marriage at the center of Trump’s claim. She has served in Congress since 2019 and meets the Constitution’s rule that a House member must be a citizen for at least seven years.

A president also cannot simply revoke a political opponent’s citizenship or order that person deported.

Federal law permits denaturalization when the government proves that citizenship was illegally obtained or secured through the concealment or willful misrepresentation of a material fact. The Justice Department has said such allegations must be established through “clear, unequivocal, and convincing evidence.”

No publicly established court judgment has found that Omar committed naturalization fraud or that she is unlawfully present in the United States.

Trump’s description of her as dishonest or unintelligent is political opinion, not a legally testable claim. Omar has also faced legitimate criticism over some of her statements, financial statements, and political positions. None of those controversies, however, proves that she is not an American citizen or has no right to serve in Congress.

The Trump-Omar Feud Is Unlikely To End Anytime Soon

Trump’s latest attack may have been delivered as part of a comedy routine, but the subject matter was familiar: Ilhan Omar’s intelligence, her marriage, her birthplace, and whether she belongs in America.

Omar’s response was equally familiar. She did not simply reject Trump’s accusation; she attacked his intelligence, presidency, and fitness to lead the country.

Their feud now spans most of Omar’s congressional career and has survived elections, investigations, threats, and repeated national controversies.

Trump benefits by presenting Omar as the representation of all his movement opposes: progressive politics, Muslim representation, refugee resettlement, and an increasingly diverse Democratic Party.

Omar benefits by presenting Trump’s attacks as proof that she represents the communities and political ideas he most wants to silence.

Neither politician appears interested in de-escalation. Judging by the speed with which their latest confrontation spread, their supporters are not requesting it either.
