Megyn Kelly is getting deeply personal about motherhood — and the emotional weight that sometimes comes with starting a family later in life.
Megyn Kelly Gets Emotional About Having Children Later in Life
In a candid chat on The Dr. Jordan B. Peterson Podcast, the 54-year-old broadcaster opened up about a topic that’s hitting home for many women: the complex feelings around becoming a parent at an older age. Kelly, who had her first child at 38, says one thing about her timeline “haunts” her — the idea that she might have less time with her kids as they grow up.
“Every time we talk about their lives, I’m calculating my age,” she admitted. “It’s his age plus 42 — that’s what I’ll be when my youngest has kids. I hate that.”
But while the regret lingers, Kelly is also quick to share her gratitude. “I’m so grateful I have them at all,” she said, noting how many women don’t get that chance. And in a surprising twist, she actually sees an upside to the late start: a calmer, wiser parenting style. “The calm I’ve brought to motherhood has been a boon to my children who are calm and cool,” she said.
Kelly’s story comes at a time when more women are following a similar path. A new CDC report shows that the average age of first-time moms in the U.S. rose from 26.6 in 2016 to 27.5 in 2023. Second and third-time moms are also getting older, suggesting a national shift in when women are choosing to have kids.
As for Kelly, she says her later start wasn’t part of a grand plan — she just didn’t meet her husband, novelist Douglas Brunt, until they were both 35. The couple now has three kids: Yates, 15, Yardley, 14, and Thatcher, 12.
Back in 2020, Kelly made headlines for pulling her children out of their pricey NYC private schools and relocating the family to Connecticut. Though she praised the teachers and community, she said the schools took a sharp turn “toward social justice stuff” that no longer aligned with her views.
Whether it’s school choices or motherhood timelines, one thing’s clear — Megyn Kelly is navigating it all with brutal honesty, and she’s not afraid to talk about the parts that still tug at her heart.
The candor was on display this week, when she went after after a former friend of pop superstar Taylor Swift.
Megyn Kelly Slams Blake Lively As A “Bully”
Megyn Kelly didn’t hold back on her podcast this week — and the target of her ire was none other than Blake Lively.
During the June 11 episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, the outspoken journalist sat down with powerhouse attorney Bryan Freedman, who represents Justin Baldoni. The topic? The It Ends With Us drama — and a judge’s surprising decision to throw out Baldoni’s $400 million lawsuit against his co-star Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds.
Kelly was visibly fired up, labeling Lively a “bully” who’s just not built for any kind of criticism. “She’s an obvious bully who can’t take any rounds of negative press,” Kelly said bluntly. “It’s just absurd.”
According to Kelly, public figures — especially ones as high-profile as Lively — should know the deal by now. “You and I both know that public figures have to take tons of negative press,” she told Freedman. “Trying to ruin a man’s life over one mild round [of criticism] is just insane.”
She argued that the backlash was mild compared to what many celebrities endure — and Lively’s extreme reaction reveals a bigger issue: an obsession with maintaining a perfect image.
This latest round of drama adds even more fuel to the already messy fallout from It Ends With Us. And if Kelly’s passionate take is any indication, it’s far from over.
