Daniel Naroditsky: The Grandmaster Who Taught the World to Play
The chess community has been deeply affected by the sudden passing of Daniel Naroditsky. He was known by his beloved fans as “Danya.” The American prodigy and grandmaster was only 29 years old.
How Did Daniel Naroditsky Die?
According to a statement from his family, Daniel Naroditsky died on October 19. The cause of death is not known.
The Daily Mail revealed that the chess master was found dead on his couch in Charlotte, North Carolina, by fellow chess grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk.
Police confirmed to the Daily Mail they suspect “Naroditsky may have committed suicide or accidentally overdosed and are awaiting toxicology results to determine what was in his system.”
The Charlotte Chess Center has also confirmed the passing of the popular chess player. Naroditsky’s stunned and grieving family has requested privacy during this difficult time. They have not released any information regarding the cause of death.
The statement from the relatives read: “It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Daniel Naroditsky. Daniel was a talented chess player, commentator, and educator, and a cherished member of the chess community.”
A Prodigy’s Rapid Rise
Daniel Naroditsky, a California native, made chess his calling when he was 6. By the age of 12, he won the Under-12 World Youth Chess Championship in 2007.
He accumulated the wins, holding the International Master title in 2011, and, unsurprisingly, achieved the ultimate victory as a chess player by becoming a Grandmaster in 2013 at the age of 18.
He claimed the U.S. National Blitz Championship victory in August 2025. Daniel Naroditsky is also a graduate of Stanford University, holding a degree in history, and is a renowned and prolific author.
At the age of 14, he penned and published Mastering Positional Chess, earning the title of the youngest published chess author in history with the book.
He went on to publish Mastering Positional Chess: Practical Lessons of a Junior World Champion (2010) and Mastering Complex Endgames: Practical Lessons, Critical Ideas & Plans (2012).
The Teacher of a Generation
Daniel Naroditsky was a superstar online, thanks to his smart decision to embrace streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube, where his channels quickly blew up, amassing over 800,000 followers and subscribers. He was also a commentator for major events.
Fans say he will leave a void in the chess community because he was more than a player; he was a dedicated teacher.
He had a unique gift for teaching complex topics in the simplest way. He possessed a calm passion and patience that made it possible for amateurs to study with him and understand his extraordinary skills.
Many believed that he would mainly be remembered for his dedication to teaching chess, a selfless act that might have fundamentally changed how the game is learned and appreciated by a new generation. Those close to the chess player described him as one of the most influential and kind-hearted voices in the modern game.
Controversy: The Backlash Against Kramnik
Daniel Naroditsky’s passing is unfortunately riddled with controversy and unexpected drama, largely due to former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik and some fans who viewed his last stream.
Kramnik, armed with dozens of screenshots and a plethora of theories, shared several messages on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, now known as X.
According to the controversial chess champion, there is more to the story, and it warrants further investigation.
He claimed there is a possibility of substance abuse. He insisted that a “proper investigation” should take place, but was unable to deliver any serious or concrete evidence.
Not many are taking the allegations seriously, for the two chess giants share a complicated past. In 2024, the pair was embroiled in a public feud.
Kramnik, who was not a fan of Naroditsky and went as far as accusing him of cheating, has been accused of bullying by some in the chess community.
According to an alleged private message sent by a viewer who had watched Naroditsky’s final stream, many were concerned by what they witnessed that day.
Some of his followers feared for Naroditsky’s condition and questioned whether he was under the influence of drugs during the stream, where he looked erratic and incoherent.
Kramnik tweeted, “What exactly happened? Because I received this two days ago from a friend of mine, a chess fan, and at least did what I could to warn people to do something urgently in my posts. To those who prefer blaming and shaming instead of helping. Awful tragedy, hope properly investigated.”
Hours before the announcement of Naroditsky’s sudden death, Kramnik claimed that Naroditsky was “on something else than sleeping pills.”
He continued after the death was confirmed by saying: “Too high a price paid, but if I was the only person shouting about the obvious long-term problems of Danya becoming alarming, requiring urgent measures from people around, while ‘friends’ only cared about hiding it and erase evidence, it’s rotten to the core.”
Some fans have taken to Reddit and other social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, to express their concerns about watching Naroditsky’s last stream on Twitch.
Some pointed out that he was not his usual self; he was incoherent, distressed, visibly anxious, and physically and mentally unwell as he discussed the toll of the controversy surrounding Kramnik’s cheating accusations.
He fell asleep during the session, and then, without warning, started speaking in Russian. At one point, a relative had to rush over and put an end to the streaming session.
A video of the last stream has been deleted from his official Twitch account, with no explanation given to his millions of fans or the media.
Update:
Daniel Naroditsky’s mother, Elena, spoke to the Daily Mail to share her heartbreak and address rumors about her son’s death, including allegations from Naroditsky’s nemesis Vladimir Kramnik that he was a cheater and died from overmedication.
The sobbing mother said: “There was nothing more important to Daniel than his dignity and his name as a chess player. And the ex-world champion was trying to say he’s a cheater. Daniel tried to defend himself so much. The whole world was on Daniel’s side. He played more and did more and more because he was trying to prove that he’s not what he was accused of.”
She went on to reveal that her son was planning to visit family in the Bay Area later this week, to celebrate his birthday and meet his brother’s newborn baby, but now the family is preparing for his funeral.
She added: “My sister just came from Philadelphia. We’re just trying to assess what to do. There are a lot of plans for the funeral. It’s a tragedy,’ the mother sobbed. ‘He was my dearest son. Daniel was such a life. He was so brilliant, so incredibly kind and loving, thoughtful, giving, inspiring.”
Update II:
The International Chess Federation (FIDE)has announced it has launched an investigation into the comments regarding Naroditsky made by Russian chess grandmaster Kramnik.
