Arizona Man Gerald McClellan Dies After Staff Allegedly Ignored Safety Button For Four Days

Gerald McClellan’s death raises new concerns about safety protocols and care home accountability.

Gerald McClellan has died at the age of 75. However, the details of his death are disturbing and have rattled his family, especially his niece, Angela Boorn.

Boorn was the one, unfortunately, to discover her uncle’s almost mummified body at the living facility where he resided in Arizona.

Four Days Without Contact With Uncle Gerald McClellan

Angela Boorn explained that after four days without contact from her uncle, Gerald McClellan, who lived at the Livestream at Sun City in Arizona, she decided to visit him on the fifth day of no communication. The facility is described as an independent living community.

A Disturbing Discovery

When she arrived at his room on the fifth day, she stumbled on a distressing scene; her uncle had died while sitting in his wheelchair. The body had deteriorated to the point of being almost mummified, indicating he may have passed away several days earlier. “It looked like a skeleton in a chair,” Boorn said per AZ Family. “The face, the eyes were hollowed out.”

The distressed woman eventually called 911, and Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies rushed to the scene and removed the remains.

Boorn explained that her uncle had been living at the Livestream at Sun City since January, following the passing of his beloved wife.

Failure of the Safety System

The grieving niece confessed that Gerald McClellan was like a second father to her. She picked the facility because she had promised her aunt she would take care of him. “I promised my aunt that I would take care of him when she passed away,” she said.

Earlier this year, after touring the facility and speaking with staff members, they reassured her and explained that it was a place where her uncle would be comfortable. They also said that there was a safety system in place requiring residents to press a button every day before 10:00 a.m.; if residents did not press the button, a staff member was supposed to check on them that day.

However, for unknown reasons, the uncle was unable to press the button for four days, and none of the staff members bothered to check on him, allegedly, to see if he needed medical attention.

“He didn’t push the button; they tried to call him, didn’t get a hold of him and still did not go check on him,” she said, per AZ Family. “I just remember running out of the room and running to the front desk and just asking her when was the last time you checked on him.” “Nobody should have to see that. It didn’t even look like a person because he had been there for so long,” added Boorn.

Investigation Underway

Boorn spoke to the media outlet, describing the scene and noting that her uncle “no longer looked like a human.” The authorities believe he passed away several days prior.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office: “An on-scene investigation into the death ensued, during which the scene and Gerald were examined. In the totality of the investigation, no evidence or information was uncovered that tended to show a criminal nexus existed. The cause and manner of Gerald’s death remain unknown and under investigation. This investigation is ongoing.”

LifeStream at Sun City issued a statement that read: “We deeply saddened by the passing of one of our residents. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to their family and loved ones during this difficult time. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we are not sharing further details at this time.We extend our sincere gratitude to emergency responders for their compassion, professionalism, and support.”

While people on social media are blaming the staff, only a full investigation will tell the whole story.
